Think Theater
In August 2009, Statement Arts launched The Think Theatre Project. This exciting educational theater program was offered to the children of LGBT families at family week in Provincetown, Massachusetts. For the past twelve years, Family Week has been dedicated to enriching the lives of LGBT families from around the world. In 2008, Family Week had over 500 LGBT headed families who attended. Each year, families and organizations strive to make the event better.
The Think Theatre Project was thrilled to fill the need for educational theater during Family Week by offering a play and an improvisation workshop to the children of the LGBT community. The project created thought provoking theater experiences that sparked critical thinking and discussion relevant to the audience's life experience.
From August 3-7, the Think Theatre Project brought a team of professional actors and arts educators to create a wonderful learning experience. Throughout the week, we offered educational theater performances of the play Peacemaker by David Holman, for ages K-3.
Immediately following the performance was a post play discussion led by the actors. The discussion focused on diversity, tolerance and the social issues that the children of LGBT families face everyday. Out of the Box, an improvisation workshop for ages 4-7yrs., allowed the students to express themselves freely in a safe and playful environment, free of judgment. Our program strengthened creativity, critical thinking, and life skills while guiding participants to examine social issues.
The Think Theatre Project’s goal was to create a sense of community for children of LGBT parents through dialogue, focusing on personal yet common experiences. Theater is one of the primary ways children learn about life: about actions and consequences, about others and about themselves. The Think Theatre Project was proud to join the families attending Family Week ’09, being part of the movement towards increased awareness, tolerance and education within the LGBT community. Through this experience, we hope we empowered the children to carry what they learn into their daily lives.
